Technology-Based Interventions to Improve Road Safety in Bengaluru
Leveraging AI, Smart Infra tructure, and Data Analytic to Build Safer Urban Road A collaborative initiative between Mercede -Benz Re earch and Development India (MBRDI) and IIT Madra to deploy intelligent traffic technologie that enhance road afety, improve compliance, and create data-driven olution for afer mobility. Traditional enforcement method often truggle to provide continuou monitoring or generate actionable data, highlighting the need for technology-enabled intervention that improve road afety while upporting evidence-ba ed traffic management. By generating real-world evidence on the effectivene of technology-enabled intervention , IIT Madra aim to develop replicable framework that can upport afer, marter, and more u tainable tran portation y tem acro the country. The Initiative IIT Madra , in partner hip with Mercede -Benz Re earch and Development India (MBRDI), i implementing a comprehen ive road afety programme acro Bengaluru' Old Madra Road (OMR) and Airport Road corridor . The project combine AI-enabled urveillance camera , edge computing device , intelligent pede trian ignal , Variable Me age Sign (VMS) board , and cientifically de igned road marking to improve traffic di cipline, protect pede trian , and upport afer road infra tructure. The intervention have been continuou ly refined through field a e ment and clo e coordination with BBMP, NHAI, and traffic police authoritie to en ure they addre evolving on-ground condition . Technology Driving Safer Mobility The project integrate intelligent urveillance with infra tructure improvement to addre multiple road afety challenge . AI-powered camera y tem monitor peeding, lane violation , ignal jumping, parking violation , and pede trian movement, while rede igned junction , lane egregation, pede trian cro ing , Pelican ignal , and VMS board improve driver behaviour and pede trian afety. Rather than relying olely on enforcement, the initiative create a data-driven eco y tem that enable continuou monitoring, evidence-ba ed deci ion-making, and calable deployment acro urban road network . Road marking de ign , vendor finali ation, and implementation planning have al o been completed, with Pha e II focu ing on Pelican pede trian ignal , VMS board , lane marking , and additional intelligent traffic infra tructure. Once in tallation are complete, the project will undertake before-and-after data collection and analy i to quantitatively mea ure improvement in traffic compliance and road afety outcome .
