Building a Safer, Smarter and More Accountable Commercial Transport Ecosystem

A collaborative initiative to develop India's first data-driven Commercial Driver Rating System that improves road safety, enhances driver welfare, and establishes national standards for commercial mobility.

The Challenge

Commercial drivers form the backbone of India's logistics and transport sector, yet they operate under demanding conditions marked by long working hours, stressful traffic environments, inadequate support systems, and inconsistent regulatory oversight. Today, there is no standardized, objective framework to evaluate driving behaviour, incentivize safe practices, or help fleet operators and policymakers make informed decisions. As a result, road safety, driver well-being, and operational efficiency continue to suffer.

Vision

The Commercial Driver Rating System envisions a future where every commercial driver in India is assessed through fair, transparent, and technology-enabled standards that reward safe driving and encourage continuous skill development. By building the digital infrastructure for nationwide adoption, the initiative seeks to transform road safety, strengthen the logistics ecosystem, and establish India as a global leader in intelligent and responsible mobility.

The Initiative

IIT Madras, in partnership with Daimler, is developing a Commercial Driver Rating System (CDRS) a first-of-its-kind digital platform that uses smartphone data, vehicle sensors, behavioural analytics, and artificial intelligence to objectively assess commercial driving performance. By combining real-world driving data with advanced modelling techniques, the project aims to create a transparent, standardized driver rating framework that can be adopted across the commercial transport ecosystem. The initiative also seeks to establish a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) comprising national data standards, secure data management, and interoperable technology for large-scale implementation.

Innovation

The project goes beyond traditional fleet monitoring by integrating behavioural science, sensor technologies, and data analytics to understand the multiple factors that influence driving performance. It will define standardized Driver Performance Indicators (DPIs), develop a comprehensive driver rating score, and create a national database of commercial driving behaviour. The resulting platform has the potential to become a trusted benchmark for commercial licensing, insurance assessment, recruitment, fleet management, and evidence-based policymaking.

By promoting responsible driving behaviour and enabling data-driven decision-making across the transport sector, the initiative has the potential to significantly reduce road accidents, improve working conditions for commercial drivers, and save thousands of lives every year.
