Empowering STEM Students with Industry-Ready Skills in Data Centre Operations and Critical Digital Infrastructure

India's digital economy is expanding at an unprecedented pace, driven by the rapid growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data centres, and digital services. As digital infrastructure continues to scale, there is an increasing demand for professionals equipped with specialised skills in data centre operations, infrastructure management, thermal and power systems, and predictive maintenance. Bridging the gap between academic education and industry-ready expertise is essential to building a future-ready workforce that can support India's digital transformation.
Vision
The IIT Madras–Vertiv partnership envisions building a future-ready workforce capable of supporting India's rapidly evolving digital infrastructure. By combining world-class academic expertise, industry knowledge, and hands-on learning, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, enabling students to become innovators and skilled professionals who will power the next generation of data centres and critical digital infrastructure.
The Initiative
Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, Vertiv, in partnership with IIT Madras and IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, has launched a comprehensive upskilling initiative to prepare students for careers in the data centre industry.
The programme will train over 2,000 STEM students through a 35-hour self-paced online course covering the fundamentals of data centre operations and maintenance. From this cohort, 160 high-performing students will be selected for an intensive five-day immersive programme at the IIT Madras campus, combining classroom learning with practical, industry-oriented training. The curriculum has been designed to enhance employability by integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning aligned with real-world industry requirements.
Preparing Talent for the Digital Economy
The programme equips participants with expertise in key areas that underpin modern digital infrastructure, including:
- Data centre operations and maintenance
- Critical power and thermal management
- Remote monitoring and predictive maintenance
- Best practices in operational efficiency and reliability
- Industry case studies and practical demonstrations
