While the IIT Madras BS Degree Programme has made quality higher education accessible to learners across India, financial constraints continue to prevent many deserving students from pursuing or completing their education. For students from low-income households, course registration fees often become a significant obstacle, limiting their ability to build future-ready skills and access opportunities in emerging fields.

The Sutherland Scholarship Programme envisions a future where financial limitations never prevent talented learners from accessing quality education. By investing in deserving students, the initiative is nurturing future professionals, innovators, and leaders who will contribute to India's growing knowledge economy.
The Initiative
Through its CSR support, Sutherland has partnered with IIT Madras to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the BS Degree Programme. The scholarship is offered to Indian students from families with an annual income below ₹5 lakh, enabling them to pursue Foundation-level courses without financial hardship. By reducing the cost of education, the initiative empowers students to focus on academic excellence while creating equitable access to one of India's premier educational programmes.
Impact
Since its launch, the programme has supported 148 students, including 92 women and 56 men, across India. With an investment of ₹50 lakh, the initiative has enabled students to complete 1,184 courses, with over ₹47.36 lakh already utilised towards scholarships. Beneficiaries represent diverse states across the country, demonstrating the national reach of the IIT Madras BS programme. The scholarship has also supported strong academic performance, with the majority of students maintaining CGPAs above 7.0.
Beneficiaries
The programme primarily supports students from economically weaker and lower-middle-income families, including children of grocery store owners, small business owners, army personnel, homemakers, and daily wage earners. For many recipients, the scholarship has reduced financial stress, enabled uninterrupted learning, and allowed them to concentrate on their studies rather than educational expenses. Several beneficiaries also shared that the support helped them continue their education while easing the financial burden on their families.
