Transforming Rural Classrooms into Innovation Laboratories

An IIT Madras initiative empowering rural government school students through hands-on STEM education, design thinking, and digital manufacturing.

The Challenge

For many students in rural government schools, science is taught primarily through textbooks, leaving little opportunity to experiment, build, or understand how technology works in everyday life. Limited access to modern laboratories and emerging technologies restricts curiosity, creativity, and exposure to engineering as a career. Bridging this gap requires learning environments where students can explore, question, and create through experience rather than memorization.

Vision

The Device Engineering Labs envision a future where every child—irrespective of geography or socio-economic background—has access to world-class experiential STEM education. By embedding innovation, design thinking, and digital manufacturing into school education, IIT Madras aims to inspire the next generation of engineers, inventors, and entrepreneurs who will shape India's technological future.

The Initiative

The Teach to Learn initiative at IIT Madras established Device Engineering Labs (DEL) in rural government schools across Tamil Nadu to bring experiential STEM education directly into classrooms. Students learn by dismantling and reassembling everyday devices, understanding engineering principles through hands-on exploration, while also gaining practical skills in computer-aided design and 3D printing. The programme nurtures curiosity, problem-solving, and a culture of innovation from an early age.

Building Future Innovators

Over two years, the programme reached more than 1,200 students across 10 government schools, guiding them through progressively advanced engineering concepts. Students explored the inner workings of common devices such as binoculars, stethoscopes, weighing scales, electric irons, and hair dryers while learning to design and manufacture their own models using industry-standard 3D printing tools. The initiative also strengthened sustainability through a "Train the Trainer" programme at IIT Madras, equipping educators with the skills to deliver hands-on STEM education independently.

Impact

The Device Engineering Labs have transformed the way students engage with science—moving from passive learning to active experimentation. Through collaborative projects, critical thinking exercises, and real-world engineering challenges, students developed confidence, technical skills, and creative problem-solving abilities. Beyond schools, the initiative expanded its reach through specialised workshops and a 3D Printing Conference that introduced students, teachers, and young entrepreneurs to the educational, entrepreneurial, and livelihood opportunities enabled by additive manufacturing technologies.
