Bio-Inspired Information Archiving Mechanism

Objective
- We propose a new concept of storing high volume information in the form of genomic transcript. Not only is the genomic load very high, but it is also well-known that genomes can be well-preserved right from a single cell to higher organisms for millions of Years and cannot be destroyed by the harsh conditions of nature.
Description
- We propose to perform information storage as a genomic transcript in this pilot scale project. Specifically, we shall convert a few pages of written document into bacteria after converting the data into genomic imprint. We will also ensure that this stored information can be retrieved after isolating genomic imprint using several molecular technologies and by encrypting through data analysis, which will be patented and used.
Impact
- Long term large scale storage is the need of the hour. Several government and private organisations are looking for persistent storage of data for over a few hundred Years and that grows at close to 1 terabyte per quarter. The proposed research, if successful, shall solve the above problem in total. IIT Madras is also the proposer of the Light Stor storage standard, which many private storage based industries have shown keen interest in adopting.
