For many families, the fight against cancer begins long before a hospital visit.
It begins with awareness. With access. With the opportunity to detect a disease early enough to make a difference.
Across India, countless people still face barriers to timely cancer screening and treatment, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Addressing these gaps requires more than medical expertise; it requires sustained outreach, strong partnerships, and a commitment to supporting patients at every stage of their journey.
This vision lies at the heart of Hyundai Hope for Cancer, the flagship CSR initiative of Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) in partnership with IIT Madras. What started as an effort to improve cancer awareness, screening, and research is now evolving into a comprehensive ecosystem that spans prevention, early detection, and treatment support
Today, that journey is reaching more communities than ever before.
Bringing Early Detection Closer to Communities
For many people living in remote and semi-urban regions, access to specialised cancer screening remains limited. Recognising that distance should never be a barrier to care, Hyundai Hope for Cancer introduced fully equipped mobile cancer screening units that take screening services directly to communities.
The impact has already been significant in Tamil Nadu, where more than 40,000 screenings have been conducted across 17 districts.
Building on this success, the programme is now expanding its reach to Maharashtra and Haryana, bringing the same model of doorstep screening and awareness to thousands more individuals.
Over the next three years, the initiative plans to conduct more than 430 awareness and screening camps across the three states, with the goal of reaching 1.27 lakh people.
Every camp represents an opportunity, not just to screen for cancer, but to identify risks early, encourage preventive care, and potentially save lives through timely intervention.
Strengthening the Network of Care
As the initiative grows, so does the need for strong healthcare partnerships that can ensure quality and continuity of care.
To support this next phase, IIT Madras collaborated with Karkinos Healthcare and the Cancer Research and Relief Trust (CRRT). Together, the partners are combining clinical expertise with community outreach capabilities to expand access to preventive oncology services.
The collaboration will support cancer screening camps, early detection programmes, and vaccination initiatives across rural and semi-urban districts. More importantly, it creates a framework that allows healthcare delivery to scale while maintaining clinical rigour and patient-centred care.
It is a model that demonstrates how industry, healthcare providers, and non-profit organisations can work together to address one of the country's most pressing public health challenges.
Investing in Prevention Before Disease Strikes
While screening helps detect cancer early, some cancers can be prevented altogether.
One of the most significant recent interventions under Hyundai Hope for Cancer focuses on HPV vaccination, a proven measure for reducing the risk of cervical cancer.
The programme has already vaccinated 797 girls in the districts of Ariyalur, Virudhunagar, and Salem in Tamil Nadu. Over the next three years, the initiative aims to vaccinate more than 4,500 girls across Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Haryana.
Prioritising girls in the 9–18 age group, the programme seeks to protect future generations from one of the most common yet preventable cancers affecting women in India.
By investing in prevention today, the initiative is helping create healthier outcomes for years to come.
Ensuring That Treatment Remains Within Reach
Early detection is critical. But for many families, receiving a diagnosis marks the beginning of another challenge: the financial burden of treatment.
Recognising this reality, HMIF is launching a dedicated Cancer Cure Fund designed to support underprivileged children and low-income families.
The fund aims to ensure that financial hardship does not stand between a patient and the care they need. It will support the entire continuum of cancer care, from early detection and genomic research to treatment access.
A dedicated website has also been launched to make information and support more accessible to those who need it most.
Building a More Hopeful Future
The story of Hyundai Hope for Cancer is no longer only about screening camps, research initiatives, or individual interventions. It is increasingly about building an integrated support system that accompanies individuals and families through every stage of the cancer journey.
From mobile screening units reaching underserved communities, to vaccination programmes protecting young girls, to partnerships that strengthen healthcare delivery, and treatment support for vulnerable families, each effort contributes to a larger mission.
A mission where access to cancer care is not determined by geography or financial circumstance.
A mission where prevention, early detection, and treatment are connected.
And a mission that continues to bring hope and healthcare to communities across India.
