The Opportunity
Despite remarkable advances in neuroscience, the human brain remains one of the least understood organs. Most neurological discoveries continue to rely on animal models, limiting our understanding of human brain disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and developmental disorders.
The IIT Madras Brain Centre has developed a first-of-its-kind high-throughput terapixel histology platform capable of imaging entire human brains at cellular resolution, creating unprecedented datasets to advance neuroscience and precision medicine.
Our Vision
To create India's largest high-resolution digital repository of whole human brains, enabling researchers to understand disease at the cellular level and accelerate breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment and brain health.
The initiative supports the long-term goal of imaging 100+ human brains, positioning India as a global leader in brain mapping research.

The Brain Centre has established an end-to-end proprietary workflow that transforms donated human brains into interactive digital brain atlases.

Progress Achieved (March 2025)
Key Milestones
✔ Completed ~10,000 serial brain sections from a post-mortem ischemic stroke brain
✔ Performed Nissl, H&E, Myelin and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining
✔ Generated detailed cellular maps of stroke pathology
✔ Characterised vascular integrity, inflammation, hypoxia, neuronal death and axonal regeneration using advanced molecular markers
✔ Established one of India's most comprehensive multimodal human brain datasets for ischemic stroke research.
