Putting India at the Forefront of Human Brain Cartography

Vision

The IIT Madras Brain Centre aims to create one of the world's largest collections of high-resolution human brain maps, providing an open scientific resource that will transform neuroscience research for decades to come. By integrating advanced imaging technologies, computational tools, and interdisciplinary expertise, the Centre seeks to accelerate discoveries in brain development, neurological disorders, precision medicine, and brain-inspired technologies ensuring that India plays a leading role in shaping the future of global brain research.

The Challenge

The human brain is the most complex organ in the human body, yet our understanding of its structure and function remains limited. Despite decades of international efforts, fewer than 20 complete high-resolution human brain datasets are available globally, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of brain development, neurological disorders, and disease mechanisms. Addressing this challenge requires not only cutting-edge neuroscience but also breakthroughs in imaging, engineering, computational science, and data analytics.

Advances in human brain mapping have the potential to transform the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders, accelerate precision medicine, and deepen our understanding of how the human brain develops and functions. IIT Madras' Innovation

The IIT Madras Brain Centre has established a world-leading technology platform that combines neuroscience, medicine, engineering, and advanced imaging to create whole human brain maps at cellular resolution. Unlike conventional research programmes that begin with animal models, the Centre has leapfrogged directly to human brain research by developing an end-to-end workflow encompassing tissue preservation, cryosectioning, staining, whole-slide digitisation, and three-dimensional reconstruction. This integrated platform enables the creation of terabyte-scale digital brain atlases that provide unprecedented insight into the organisation of the human brain.

Global Impact

The Centre's flagship initiative, DHARANI—India's three-dimensional human brain atlas—has earned international recognition through a special editorial in the Journal of Comparative Neurology, one of the world's oldest and most respected neuroscience journals. This milestone places IIT Madras among a select group of institutions advancing global human brain cartography and establishes India as an emerging leader in frontier neuroscience research.

Key Milestones

Since launching its human brain mapping programme in 2020, the Centre has made remarkable progress toward creating one of the world's most comprehensive repositories of human brain data. More than 70 human brains have already been processed, with over 300 fetal, adult, neurotypical, and pathological brain specimens in the pipeline. The long-term vision is to generate 100+ high-resolution human brain maps, creating a globally significant resource for neuroscience research and clinical discovery.
