Developing an Indigenous Hyperthermia System to Improve Cancer Care

The Challenge

Cancer remains one of India's leading healthcare challenges, with a significant number of patients diagnosed at advanced stages where treatment outcomes depend on multimodal therapies. Hyperthermia therapy—controlled heating of tumour tissues—has been clinically proven to enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, advanced clinical hyperthermia systems are largely imported, prohibitively expensive, and inaccessible to most hospitals across the country, limiting their widespread adoption in cancer care.

The Initiative

IIT Madras is developing a completely indigenous Clinical Hyperthermia System that delivers precisely controlled microwave energy for treating deep-seated tumours. The project integrates programmable microwave sources, multi-channel power amplifiers, phased-array antennas, treatment planning software, and patient-specific control systems into a single clinical platform. Designed to international standards while being significantly more affordable, the system aims to make advanced hyperthermia therapy accessible to hospitals across India.

Advancing Indigenous Medical Technology

Significant progress has been achieved across hardware, software, and system integration. Researchers have developed patient-specific treatment planning tools, optimized antenna configurations for precise energy delivery, and validated thermal performance through laboratory testing. The project continues to refine treatment accuracy, safety mechanisms, and system reliability while integrating multiple engineering components into a clinically deployable platform.

Creating Lasting Impact

Once completed, the indigenous clinical hyperthermia system has the potential to transform cancer treatment in India by substantially reducing dependence on imported equipment and lowering treatment costs. The technology will enable hospitals to provide advanced combination therapy for cancer patients while strengthening India's capability to develop high-end medical devices domestically. Beyond improving patient care, the project establishes a strong foundation for innovation in biomedical engineering and medical technology manufacturing.
