Overview

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming industries and redefining the skills required for the future workforce. Recognizing that educators are at the forefront of this transformation, BMW TechWorks India partnered with IIT Madras and IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation to empower school teachers and college faculty with practical AI knowledge and teaching capabilities. Through a structured, three-track programme, the initiative aims to bridge the AI skills gap in rural and underserved educational institutions, enabling educators to confidently integrate AI into classrooms and create future-ready learning environments.

Vision

BMW TechWorks India's partnership with IIT Madras reflects a shared commitment to democratizing AI education by ensuring that quality AI training reaches educators beyond urban centres. By strengthening teacher capabilities today, the initiative is laying the foundation for an inclusive, technology-driven education ecosystem that prepares future generations for an AI-powered world

Objectives

The programme was designed to:

  1. Enable rural K–12 teachers to earn AI certifications through SWAYAM Plus by supporting assessment and certification costs.
  2. Provide advanced AI training at IIT Madras for high-performing teachers.
  3. Build AI capabilities among faculty members in rural Arts and Science colleges through Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs).
  4. Establish a scalable and sustainable framework for AI-enabled teacher training across India.

Key Highlights

  1. 1,000 teachers enrolled across two cohorts.
  2. 150 teachers supported towards AI certification.
  3. Two advanced AI training cohorts conducted at IIT Madras for selected educators.
  4. Faculty Development Programmes organized for rural college faculty members.
  5. Total project investment of ₹9.5 lakh supporting certification, advanced training, and faculty development.

Impact

The programme has strengthened AI readiness among educators by equipping teachers with practical knowledge to effectively plan, teach, and assess using AI tools. Beyond individual capacity building, the initiative has enhanced AI teaching capabilities in rural and underserved institutions while establishing a scalable model for future teacher development programmes. By empowering educators, the partnership creates a multiplier effect that benefits thousands of students and supports India's transition towards an AI-enabled education ecosystem.
