Urban Greening CSR: Conserving IIT Madras, the Oxygen Factory of Chennai

Nurturing the green cover at IITM 'Helping Chennai breathe'

Nurturing the green cover at IITM 'Helping Chennai breathe'

Principal Investigator

Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula

Objective

  • To help conserve this precious source of biodiversity that is crucial to Chennai, and vital for us all.

Description

  • The IIT-M campus boasts a unique range of flora and fauna. The campus was carved out of a natural forest area, that is over a verdant 600+ acres. The campus is also called the 'Oxygen Factory of Chennai' and veritably so. With lakhs of trees of 300+ varieties, the beautifully forested campus amidst the 'concrete jungle' of Chennai has several 'mini-ecosystems' within, nurtured carefully by the staff of IIT-M. The campus has been providing oxygen, nurturing the city of Chennai all these decades. Now, it is time for the city of Chennai to give back. We want supporters for our earnest efforts in sustaining, managing and protecting the flora and fauna of the IIT-M campus.

Impact

  • The social impact from this project can be felt in three ways: First, the 'oxygen factory' of Chennai will continue to thrive. Second, these funds would provide us an outlet to create awareness programs for environmentally conscious citizens, by initiating campus tours and other programs. Third, IIT Madras would become an example for the country at large. It will reveal that a college located in a city can in-turn benefit the city in the form of an 'oxygen factory'.
