Plant Fibre Reinforced Biodegradable Polymer Packaging Substitutes Project

Plant fibre reinforced biodegradable polymer substitutes for packaging

Plant fibre reinforced biodegradable polymer substitutes for packaging

Principal Investigator

Prof. Satyanarayana Gummadi

Co-Investigator

Prof. Mukesh Doble

Objective

  • To screen and optimize the preparation of reinforced biopolymer composites for enhanced mechanical and physical properties. Scaling up the process and produce packaging films or bags for larger production of reinforced biopolymer composites. Testing of the material, stability, reusability and sensitivity analysis.

Description

  • 275 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated each year around the world. In India alone more than 34 lakh tons of plastic waste was generated in 2019-20. The adoption of biodegradable materials from renewable natural resources for food packaging by existing technologies could be a better alternative for overall carbon footprint and reduction of waste.

Impact

  • A sustainable biopolymer reinforced product with agricultural waste, as an alternate for non-biodegradable polymers for packaging and for storing fruits. Employment Generation for Women SHGs, / Rural Women. Helping the farmers to reduce wastage.
