Identification of toxic pollutants in the industrial areas- Their impact on climate and global warming
Principal Investigator
Prof. Rajakumar Balla
Objective
- To identify the toxic pollutants in the industrial surroundings of Chennai. To bring out the critical information about their release into the public domain. To find out how long such toxic pollutants exist in the atmosphere, so as to estimate their global warming and ozone formation/depletion potentials.
Description
- The collection of samples from the industrial sectors in canisters, particularly from the surroundings of the pharmaceutical/chemical industries. The collected samples will be processed to make them ready to be analyzed in the laboratory for the identification of the toxic compounds and their quantification. After the identification and quantification of the toxicants, their atmospheric lifetimes, global warming potentials, photochemical ozone formation potentials and ozone depletion potentials will be estimated using experimental and analytical methods.
Impact
- These focused studies would bring out possible toxic pollutants to public notice. The observation measurements and making the concerned industries alert of their emissions will play a vital role. These studies would not only bring out the nature of emissions but provide with the information on their effects of the biosphere in terms of health and climate.
